The Ashburton District is made up of several towns including, Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia, Mayfield, Hinds and the Foothills area incorporating Mt Somers. Each of these towns is unique in character
and history and each brings its differing scenery and special rural small town qualities to the area. Together they form the very distinctive and beautiful Ashburton District. Hub of the Ashburton District, Ashburton is the centre for business, shopping facilities, cultural, arts, sport, community and management of the district.

The Ashburton District is fortunate enough to have a large number of excellent schools, from primary, through to intermediate to two secondary schools and a polytechnic. Our primary schools all have their own special character and range from large town schools catering from Year 1 - 6 and Year 1 - 8, one intermediate school, one secondary school for students from Year 9 - 13 and one secondary school from students from Year 7 - 13. Our schools rank well against their counterparts around the country and students from the Ashburton District regularly go on to achieve highly in their chosen fields of endeavour. Ashburton's two secondary schools, Ashburton College and Mt. Hutt College regularly attract large numbers of overseas students, adding a vibrant cultural mix to their student bodies
